An ordinary towel can be very useful in escaping a fire. It can serve the following functions: (1) In fires involving \"air respirators,\" the smoke generated is characterized by high temperatures and high toxicity; inhaling it can easily cause burns to the respiratory system or poisoning. When escaping from a fire, covering the mouth and nose with a wet towel is effective in filtering out smoke. For ordinary wet towels with a water content of less than 3 times their own weight, if folded 8 times, the smoke removal efficiency can reach 60% ； With 16 layers of folding, the smoke elimination rate can exceed 90%. (2) “Simple fire extinguisher”: In the event of a gas leak and resulting fire at the valve of a liquefied gas cylinder, the hose, stove, or gas pipeline, cover the affected area with a wet towel and quickly close the valve ； In the event of a small fire, cover the flames with a wet towel to smother them and put out the fire. (3) When there is no way to escape in a fire, the \"seal strip\" allows access to a shelter room to avoid the threat of smoke. To prevent high-temperature flames and smoke from entering the room through doors, window cracks, or other openings, fabrics such as wet towels or bed sheets can be used to block those gaps or openings. Water should also be continuously poured on the doors, windows, and barriers facing the flames in order to cool them down and thus extend the time before the doors and windows are burned through. (4) If someone in a “distress signal” situation is trapped in a fire, they can wave a brightly colored towel from a window to attract the attention of rescuers. (5) When carrying hot liquefied gas cylinders and similar objects in a fire scene, to avoid burns, a wet towel can be placed under them before lifting them ； When using rope binding for self-rescue, to prevent the palms from being burned by heat generated from friction as the rope slides down, a wet towel can be wrapped around the palms to avoid injury.
