I wonder if those of you who use HG/T20553 have noticed that when steel pipes of series Ib or II are selected, there is a note stating that the thick line is used only for welded steel pipes, whereas this requirement does not apply to series Ia. For example, for pipes of DN200, Series II specifies that seamless steel pipes can only be used when the wall thickness is 6 mm or greater; however, Series Ia allows the use of seamless steel pipes for both Sch5 (2.9 mm) and Sch10 (4.0 mm). Personally, I think it is because seamless steel pipes have requirements regarding wall thickness during piercing, but I’m confused as to why series Ia does not have such a requirement.

HG20553 is the standard for selecting pipe sizes, while GB 17395 is the size standard for steel pipe manufacturers. The II series of HG20553 has had its wall thickness adjusted in accordance with GB17395 (the minimum wall thickness for DN200 is 6 mm). The Ia series is based on American standards, and its wall thickness has not been adjusted according to GB17395; if DN200 with wall thickness Sch5 or Sch10 is selected for design purposes, it may not be available for purchase in the market.
