During the initial construction phase of sulfur recovery projects, it is the responsibility of the engineering party to install eye wash stations suitable for such projects. However, many engineering parties are unsure as to the specific types and models of eye wash stations that should be used in sulfur recovery projects. Today, we will provide some key points regarding the standards and selection criteria for emergency eye wash stations in solvent regeneration units for sulfur recovery projects, based on actual cases. For example, one sulfur recovery project is located in the industrial park of Daying County, Suining City, Sichuan Province; it was built with investment from a chemical company in Sichuan, and it has an annual production capacity of 20,000 tons of sulfur recovered products as well as solvent regeneration units, along with a facility capable of treating 50 tons of acidic water per hour. During the preparation phase of this project, the design institute designed electric heat-traced eye wash stations. Professionals took into account various factors such as the factory’s environment, surrounding facilities, water pressure, water quality, and the local geographical conditions. It was determined that the local climate remained above freezing throughout the year. After consulting with the factory staff, it was found that during the sulfur granulation process, a large amount of exhaust gases dissolved in the liquid sulfur were released rapidly, resulting in a sharp increase in the H2S concentration in the liquid sulfur storage area. The high sulfur content in the system’s fuel gas, along with the poor quality of the liquid used in solvent regeneration, led to the use of flue gas containing SO2 as fuel for the exhaust incinerator. This caused the SO2 emission concentration to reach 600 mg/m3, posing serious safety risks such as the possibility of worker poisoning. Another important detail to consider is that when sulfur is exposed to elevated temperatures, it can cause varying degrees of damage to human skin and eyes. Based on thorough research and analysis of various available information, a customized solution for emergency eye wash stations was developed for such environments; the chosen model is an explosion-proof, warning-functional composite eye wash station made of 304 stainless steel. Please note that this explosion protection is not for electric tracing or electric heating. It is designed for explosion protection of alarms; this eye washer is not a heated type, but rather an ordinary eye washer to which an explosion-proof audio-visual alarm device has been added. Compared to the extremely cold regions in the north, it is necessary to customize explosion-proof electric heating and warning composite eye washers with appropriate explosion protection ratings for use on site. Moreover, the material of the eyewash station casing must be determined based on the local usage conditions – whether it should be ABS, ASA, AES, or a metal material. For these, it is necessary to get in touch with the manufacturer, the design firm, and the producer of the eye wash station to determine the product model.
