Currently, a solvent deasphalting project is underway, with DAO being used in RFCC; so should butane or propane be used as the solvent?
A 40 W ton/year vacuum residue deasphalting unit uses C-4 after etherification as a solvent and operates in supercritical conditions at 5.7 MPa; the yield of the catalyzed feed ranges from 40 to 50%, while the carbon residue content is 7–9%. Using propane as a solvent yields oil with good quality, but the yield is relatively low and energy consumption is high due to the high supercritical pressure.
