The materials commonly used for cooling towers are stainless steel, carbon steel, and copper. When carbon steel tube sheets are used, corrosion and leakage can occur at the welds of the tubes. To address the issue of corrosion in cooling towers, traditional anti-corrosion methods involve patch welding; however, this approach can lead to internal stresses in the tube sheet, potentially causing further leaks. Today, a special paint designed for cooling towers has been developed to provide excellent corrosion protection; it boasts superior resistance to chemical corrosion, can effectively prevent bimetallic corrosion, and offers good resistance to erosion, thus providing a long-lasting protective coating against corrosion. Requirements for applying paint specifically designed for cooling towers: 1. Apply the primer first. After the surface treatment of the cooling tower is approved, the prepared epoxy primer must be applied within 6 hours. The primer serves as a link between different layers and possesses strong adhesion to the substrate. Before applying the first coat of primer, the surface should be cleaned with cotton yarn dipped in gasoline to remove any debris or dust. The primer should be applied evenly, without any pooling, missed areas, pores, or bubbles; the paint film should be smooth and uniform in thickness. The paint film thickness is approximately between 25 and 35 um. The amount of primer required is 80–90 grams/m2. It is important to apply the paint once more at corners and turns. The painting order should be top to bottom first, left to right next, from the more difficult parts to the easier ones, and in a crisscross pattern. After the first coat of primer has cured naturally, fill in and level out any uneven areas, cracks, and defects on the surface using epoxy putty; thereafter, the second coat of epoxy coal flake primer can be applied in the same manner. The coating thickness is approximately 35–40 um, with a usage amount of around 100 grams per m2. 2. Apply the intermediate coat. After the primer has cured for 24 hours, the intermediate coat made of ring coal glass flake paint is applied using the same application method. The amount of paint used per application is 110–125 grams/m2, with a film thickness of 45 um. It is important to ensure that there are no pinholes, no sagging, and no missed areas in the coating; the surface of the cooling tower should be smooth, even, and uniform, with consistent gloss. 3. Apply the topcoat. After the intermediate coat has fully dried, remove any dust from the surface before applying the first layer of epoxy coal glass flake topcoat. The application rate should be 100–125 grams per m2, with a film thickness of 40–50 um ; After the first coat of topcoat has fully dried, apply the second coat in sequence, with a thickness of 80–100 um. The final coat is a critical step; when applying it, it is essential to ensure that the paint is thick, uniform in color, and smooth and even.
