The so-called tray liquid holding refers to the phenomenon where, with gas flow present, the gas holds back the liquid, enabling mass and heat transfer on the tray; meanwhile, the liquid flows down to the next tray through the downcomer, past the tray’s overflow weir. On the contrary, after parking, the liquid will flow down through the openings in the tray. The tray liquid collection tanks are equipped with weep holes during installation, to stop the inflow of liquid after shutdown. The liquid in the collection tank also flows down through the tears.
