【Beginner’s question】What is the API value of crude oil? Which aspects of oil refining are primarily affected?
1. The crude oil index is the API gravity: a value established by the American Petroleum Institute (API) to indicate the density of petroleum and petroleum products. 2. Generally, the better the quality of the petroleum, the higher its API gravity. When the crude oil index rises, oil prices go up, just as with the US dollar index.
What are the impacts of API values? Moisture content, sulfur and other impurities? For example, what is the API value in Saudi Arabia in the Middle East?
For another example, what is the API value of our crude oil? For the oil fields in Daqing, Shengli, Changqing, and Xinjiang, assuming it’s not confidential
American Petroleum Institute: An organization based in the United States that develops standards for measuring the density of oil and petroleum products; this measurement is referred to as API. The United States and China use the API degree as a benchmark for classifying crude oil. Its standard temperature is 15.6°C (60°F), and its relationship with the relative density at 15.6°C (compared to water) is such that the higher the API value, the lower the relative density. Currently, the API degree is regarded internationally as one of the main criteria for determining crude oil prices. The higher its value, the lighter the crude oil and the higher its price. API degree = 141.5/(d_oil/d_water) – 131.5. Light crude oil has an API degree greater than 34, with a density at 20°C of less than 852. Medium crude oil has an API degree between 34 and 20, with a density at 20°C of 852–930. Heavy crude oil has an API degree between 20 and 10, with a density at 20°C of 930–998. Extra-heavy crude oil has an API degree less than 10, with a density at 20°C greater than 998
