Why are there so many size standards for steel pipes in China? I took a look, and most of the specifications are similar – why isn’t there a standardization?
Agree with the original poster’s view. There are many domestic standards, which are chaotic and lack unified coordination, making them difficult to apply. Regarding the standards for these steel pipe dimensions, it can be said that the SH standard is suitable for the petrochemical industry, the HG standard is suitable for the chemical industry, while the GB standard is applicable to general applications.
On the first day of each standard, its scope of application is specified. There are also standards from other industries; unlike the American standard ASME, which classifies standards systematically under B31.3. GB/T 28708 is applicable to the selection of steel pipes for fluid transportation in pipeline projects, HG/T 20553 is used for selecting pipe sizes in the construction of new, renovated, or expanded chemical plants, and SH/T 3405 applies to steel pipelines in the petrochemical industry
