In class, I heard the teacher say that the valves used in nuclear power plants have to be imported from France, which puzzled me. I thought that valves aren’t components that require particularly high levels of technology, so what is the difficulty in manufacturing them?
You mean ordinary valves, right? Nuclear-grade valves have extremely high safety requirements; they are different from ordinary valves, and the entry criteria are stringent. No one would dare to take the risk of using them – what if something goes wrong and there’s a leak?
There are also those imported from the United States; Ford from the US is used, and the core valves for nuclear power plants are all imported, as domestic materials and manufacturing techniques are not yet capable of producing them. Domestic companies are also trying to opt for domestically produced products; our company has taken on some tasks related to the development of such domestic valves, but it’s still a long road ahead! You can imagine that a valve weighs around 300 kilograms, and all the related quality documents and drawings also weigh roughly 300 kilograms in total – all of these must be submitted to the nuclear power plant. This gives you an idea of the strict requirements involved.
