Hello everyone. There is a project in Xinjiang where the lowest temperatures in winter are around minus 25 degrees Celsius. There is a tar pipeline, and during operation its temperature ranges from 150 to 200°C, at which point the tar is in a liquid state; however, when its temperature drops, it turns solid. So, how should this tar pipeline be heated? Initially, steam heating was used, but the pipeline is lined with enamel and connected via flanges every two meters, which makes it very inconvenient to use steam heating. Later, electric heating was adopted, but it’s not clear whether the power level of electric heating will be sufficient. I would appreciate advice from those with experience in this area. Thank you.
First is still the issue of heat supply calculation; it needs to be sufficient for steam heating. Can a double-walled tube be used? This makes it easy to disassemble. With electric tracing, there are too many connections like this, and explosion protection also needs to be taken into account
If electric heating is not necessary, then it should not be used; from an operational perspective
The operation and maintenance costs of electric heat tracing are high, but the temperature can be maintained stably.
If the steam source is reliable, using steam for heating is more convenient and easier to maintain.
If it is internal ceramic, it is more appropriate to use steam tracing with a jacket.
