Hello everyone, I’m not familiar with valves and have a question: when turning the handwheel of a manual straight-through valve, why doesn’t the valve stem rotate? What holds it in place? Thank you

In a straight-through valve, the valve stem is designed to move up and down, rather than rotating. 2. Handwheel mechanism, which converts the circular motion of the handwheel into linear motion of the valve stem through gear/rack or turbine/worm transmission.
There should be a flat washer between the handwheel and the valve stem. That one must have fallen off. Take out the handwheel and take a look~
