Regarding this type of welded pipe support, which is in direct contact with the pipe weld, what is the required distance according to the standards?

The general design requirement is 50 mm; in practice, most domestic standards are based on established foreign standards, with some of those standards being adopted directly. Many of these standards lack a solid theoretical foundation or experimental data. As for this distance requirement, it is actually related to the needs associated with thermal effects – meeting that requirement is sufficient. Considering the convenience of implementing such standards, as well as the current conditions in terms of construction and materials used in China, a simple safety value has been defined. It is advisable to follow the standards during design and construction; if that’s not possible, there are still solutions available. In the scenario shown in the image, for example, it is possible to leave an opening in the pipe support at the weld area without welding there, while ensuring full welding in other areas. This way, both the standards and strength requirements are met. This approach is often used when space is limited. The issue shown in the image is actually caused by poor consideration of the pipe support location during on-site construction, and it can be completely avoided.

For many small projects in China, little attention is paid to pipe supports during construction. Sometimes something seems wrong, but no relevant standards can be found, so there is no valid reason to urge them to make corrections.
