Both NPT threads and R threads are tapered pipe threads; the difference is that the pitch angle of NPT threads is 60 degrees, while that of R threads is 55 degrees. I would like to know which one provides better sealing performance

The sealing performance of 60° and 55° sealing threads is similar, but the self-locking property of 60° threads is better than that of 55° threads (with a lower likelihood of self-loosening). The thread lead angle of a 60° thread (the Φ angle in the figure below) is smaller than that of a 55° thread. In other words, when the tooth height is the same, the number of teeth per unit length can be higher ； In other words, when the number of teeth is the same, the tooth height can be larger. For example, both R1/2 and NPT1/2 have 14 teeth per inch; the tooth height for R1/2 is 1.162 mm, while that for NPT1/2 is 1.451 mm. The friction force when tightening and loosening NPT threads is greater than that of R threads. Actually, it’s hard to say which of the two thread standards is better; some of the American thread standards were established to show that they were no longer a British colony.
Sometimes, when considering local aspects and the project objects used, NPT is still better overall, as it has a more international character.

NPT threads are American-style threads, namely National (American) Pipe Threads; they belong to the 60-degree tapered pipe thread standard in the United States and are commonly used in North America； The R thread belongs to the Whitworth thread family, also known as British Standard Pipe Thread; it is a sealing tapered pipe thread with a 55-degree angle, and is widely used in Europe and the Commonwealth** ； Both are sealed threads, and their sealing performance relies primarily on the manufacturer’s precision in processing and manufacturing techniques.
It seems that the taper-to-taper fit of NPT is better; the R thread standard features a taper-to-cylinder fit
The NPT is better, in my personal opinion.
