RT, could everyone help determine what type of steam trap this is and how it works? We use this type of steam trap in our tank areas, but recently we’ve noticed that they are all leaking. We’re not sure if it’s a problem with the installation – after all, they are installed vertically.:
It’s all been taken down – why isn’t it demolished? Your question should be among them; give it a try :)
It should be a constant-temperature type. I remember that it should be possible to send it back to the factory for maintenance on a regular basis. The thermostat element inside needs to be adjusted.
Waiting for the results; vertical installation is still rare
It belongs to the STC adjustable thermostatic steam trap. The ST system steam trap is a new product of the thermostatic type. The temperature-sensing element inside the valve contains a sensing substance composed of a temperature sensor, a saturant, a stabilizer, and a filler; by utilizing the thermal expansion and contraction as well as state changes resulting from temperature, the valve is automatically closed or opened, thereby achieving the purpose of preventing steam from entering and draining water. Choosing the appropriate specification determines the temperature range for condensate discharge.
This should be a bimetallic trap belonging to the type of traps used in steam systems, where the metal sheets deform when heated. This is adjustable; by removing that cover, you can use a screwdriver to adjust the tightness of the bolts that hold the metal sheet in place. The adjustment is based on the pressure before the trap and the pressure in the pipeline network after the trap; there are instructions and coordinate charts available for reference. It can be installed on either horizontal or vertical pipes, but attention should be paid to the installation direction. Generally, just like with globe valves, the valve body is marked with the direction of fluid flow.

The lifespan of domestic traps generally does not exceed 3 years, while imported ones can last up to 10 years. Your strainer is of the adjustable type; I have ones on site as well, and they can all be adjusted manually. Generally, the manual valve on the trap is closed first, the drain valve is opened, and the lid at the back of the trap is unscrewed counterclockwise using a wrench; there is an adjustable part inside, which can be adjusted with a screwdriver. Increase it counterclockwise and decrease it clockwise; adjust it by looking at the condensate – it’s very simple.
This is a bimetallic steam trap; water can be drained only when there is a temperature difference between the inlet and outlet, and it is mainly used in heat-traced pipelines and similar applications.
