The H76 disc check valve can be installed either horizontally or vertically. I would like to know which of these two installation methods is better in the event that the check valve spring breaks.
If we consider only the issue of the spring breaking, the best installation direction is for the fluid to flow through the valve from bottom to top; flow from top to bottom will enable the valve to close. However, under the effect of a pressure difference, it usually becomes large enough to be useful. In special situations, where the fluid flows from top to bottom with the valve open and from bottom to top with the valve closed, if the spring breaks and the pressure difference is low, the force exerted by gravity pulling the valve disc downward is less than the force exerted by the fluid pushing the valve shut upward; in such cases, the valve will lose its ability to close automatically. If spring failure is taken into account, the best result is achieved when it is installed in a vertical pipe with fluid flowing in from below and out from above
