Cold-testing of the whole system has now begun, and it is set to go into operation during this winter’s heating season. “The “Liaore Heat to Jinan” project refers to a heating initiative that utilizes the waste heat from power plants in Liaocheng, Shandong, to turn this waste into a valuable resource, thereby providing a heat source outside of Jinan city for its urban areas. The newly completed north line will, during this winter’s heating season, convert the waste heat generated by Xinyuan Power Plant of Shandong Liaocheng Xinfafa Group into high-temperature water flow in the pipelines, thereby supplying clean heat to the central area of Jinan. This 110-kilometer-long pipeline with a diameter of 1.6 meters is currently the longest, largest in diameter, and most powerful in terms of heating capacity among China’s long-distance heating pipelines. In addition to the northern route, the southern route of the \"Liaore to Jinan\" project will also be completed by the end of the year. By then, the two north-south lines, with a total length of around 150 kilometers, will be able to supply heat to 100 million square meters in Jinan. It is estimated that they will reduce coal consumption by 1.2989 million tons per heating season, as well as cut carbon dioxide emissions by 3.564 million tons – an amount equivalent to the carbon sequestration capacity of four Saihanba forest farms in one year. It is no easy task to “transport” a heat source located 100 kilometers away into the city. “The “Liao Re Ru Ji” project spans 3 cities and 5 counties (districts), passes through 140 natural villages, and includes 110 key locations. Among them, the construction of the South Line Yellow River Tunnel is the most challenging; the heating pipes have to pass 4,500 meters beneath the riverbed of the Yellow River, with a maximum burial depth of 55 meters. The construction team overcame challenges such as high water pressure, complex geology, and tunneling at steep slopes to complete China’s longest heating tunnel. As an important central city in the Yellow River Basin and a city along the air pollution transmission route in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Jinan has long faced the dual pressures of surging heating demands and the need to adjust its energy structure. “After the launch of the \"Liao Re Ru Ji\" project, the \"distant water\" solution helped alleviate the city’s immediate heating needs; by the end of the year, all 54 coal-fired boilers used for heating in Jinan’s main urban area will be shut down.
