Pipelines made of hydrochloric acid or hydrogen chloride, fiberglass pipes, and steel-lined PTFE pipes all have their own advantages and suitable applications. FRP pipes have good corrosion resistance and are suitable for transporting ordinary hydrochloric acid and hydrogen chloride. Its advantages are relatively low cost, easy installation, light weight, and low maintenance costs. Steel-lined PTFE pipes offer higher acid and alkali resistance as well as better corrosion resistance. Perfluorinated materials are currently recognized as one of the materials with the best corrosion resistance, and they are suitable for use with strong acids and bases such as hydrochloric acid and hydrogen chloride at high concentrations. Steel-lined PTFE pipes are suitable for use in extreme environments or in situations where higher safety levels are required, but they are relatively expensive and their installation process is complex. Therefore, the choice of pipeline to use depends on the specific working conditions, budget, and requirements regarding corrosion resistance and safety. .
The operating conditions are very important; the temperature plays a role as well. For hydrogen chloride, using fiberglass results in lower costs, while for hydrochloric acid, a steel lining with Teflon is a better choice.
I agree with *Lou’s view; for hydrochloric acid, fluorinated lining is the better choice. I’ve encountered situations where hydrochloric acid was stored in fiberglass storage tanks, and leaks occurred on the sides of those tanks
If the temperature is high, simply choose PTFE-lined pipes
Flange connections are prone to leakage when used to join lined pipes and fittings; The connection of fiberglass reinforced plastic pipes and fittings can be achieved through socketed adhesive bonding or wrapped butt jointing, with no leakage points. Fiberglass reinforced plastic pipes should be used when there are many connection points in long-distance pipeline transportation or when leaks must be strictly prevented along the route.
……If the temperature is not high, fiberglass-reinforced plastic pipes are definitely a good option to save money, and they are also easy to install on-site. Steel-lined PTFE pipes offer superior heat and corrosion resistance, but they are more expensive. The lengths of the fittings used for connection as well as those of the straight pipes need to be measured in advance and customized, which is quite troublesome :)
