This achievement represents a new breakthrough in China’s technology for downhole flow control in offshore oil fields, and it accelerates the process of intelligent completion of such fields. It is of great significance for ensuring energy security and boosting production in offshore oil fields. It is reported that flow control valves are currently widely used for regulating the flow in production wells and injection wells. Over 10 researchers and testers conducted nearly 100 tests and validations of components, modules, and complete systems both in laboratory conditions and underground over a period of 3 years. They overcame challenges such as long-distance communication under full load, online updates, circuit board sealing, and motor waterproofing. Breakthroughs were achieved in five key technologies: high-reliability mechanical structures, high-density hollow motors, high-reduction-ratio hollow reducers, high-precision measurement of temperature and pressure parameters, and high-accuracy flow control algorithms. Military-grade hollow motors were innovatively applied in the field of flow control valves, successfully addressing intelligent completion tasks that conventional micro-motors are unable to handle, such as achieving concentricity, large diameters, and high thrust.
