When the storage tank experiences a rapid vacuum, the vacuum valve disc opens downward to release the vacuum; similarly, when the negative pressure reaches 90% of the set value, the valve disc returns to its original position to re-seal it. In the vast majority of cases, emergency relief valves operate very infrequently, so their function is easily overlooked. When the breather valve is functioning properly, the emergency relief valve remains essentially sealed.
