Multiple hydrogen pipeline projects are being built, with a total length of nearly 6,800 km. In 2024, there was active progress in the development of hydrogen pipelines; in 2025, various policies were introduced at the local level to support the construction and pilot use of such pipelines. Since the beginning of the year, progress has been made on multiple projects and technologies, and the total length of these pipelines under construction is nearly 6,800 km, indicating a very large scale for these projects.
Kangbao-Caofeidian Hydrogen Pipeline Project: By March 2025, the Kangbao-Caofeidian Hydrogen Pipeline Project had been registered with the provincial development and reform commission; the preliminary evaluation procedures for the project were essentially complete, and survey work has begun on the section of the pipeline in Zhangbei. The Kangbao-Caofeidian hydrogen pipeline project was approved for construction by Zhangjiakou Haitai Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Haitai New Energy. On July 26, 2024, a tender was issued for the environmental impact assessment, safety assessment, social stability assessment, soil and water conservation assessment, earthquake risk assessment, geological disaster risk assessment, and mineral resource overlap assessment related to the Kangbao-Yicao Feidian hydrogen pipeline project; the tendering party was Zhangjiakou Haitai Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. The total investment in this project is 13.4 billion yuan; the total length of the pipeline network is approximately 1,037.82 kilometers. It has an annual hydrogen transport capacity of 1.55 million tons, making it the green hydrogen pipeline with the largest diameter, highest pressure, greatest transport capacity, longest distance, and highest steel grade in the world. This project will not only help improve the efficiency of new energy utilization but also provide significant support for the development of the hydrogen energy industry in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
On March 14, 2025, the Sinochem Business E-Bidding Platform issued a tender announcement for the preliminary work and feasibility study related to the key projects in the first phase of the Inner Mongolia Energy Green Hydrogen and Green Fuel Pipeline Project. The tendering party was Inner Mongolia Mengxiang Pipeline Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Inner Mongolia Energy Group. The total length of this tender is 4,400 km, comprising 14 pipelines in total: 10 green hydrogen pipelines, 3 green alcohol pipelines, and 1 green ammonia pipeline. The longest of these is the Xingan League-Tongliao-Chifeng Green Alcohol Pipeline project, with a length of approximately 1,025 km ; The shortest is the Aohan Banner-Yuanbaoshan green hydrogen pipeline project, with a length of about 82 km. The bidding project is divided into 2 lots in total. Bid Section 1 is the Shanghai-Mongolia Green Fuel Supply-Demand Linked Hydrogen Energy Corridor Pipeline Project ; Bid Section 2 includes: the Dengkou-Shanghaimiao-Ningdong hydrogen pipeline project, the Ulaat Middle Banner-Duguitala-Wushen Banner hydrogen pipeline project, the Siziwang Banner to Jungar Banner hydrogen pipeline project, and the Huade-Shangdu-Xinghe hydrogen pipeline project.
On January 14, 2025, the Beijing Development and Reform Commission published an article titled \"GDP growth target of around 5%: These are the actions Beijing will take in 2025.\" The article states that by 2025, Beijing will establish a number of green technology innovation centers, industrial innovation centers, and pilot testing platforms. It will also provide support for the development of the Energy Valley in Future Science City and the Daxing International Hydrogen Energy Demonstration Zone, striving to start construction on the Ulanqab-Yanshan Petrochemical hydrogen pipeline project, with a total of 24 hydrogen refueling stations to be built. It is reported that the Ulanqab-Yanshan Petrochemical hydrogen pipeline is part of Sinopec’s Ulanqab 100,000-ton/year integrated wind and solar hydrogen production project. This project was invested and constructed by Sinopec Xinxing (Inner Mongolia) West Hydrogen to East New Energy Co., Ltd., with a total cost of 5.94 billion yuan and a length of approximately 1,132 kilometers. Green hydrogen is delivered via this pipeline to Yanshan Petrochemical, Tianjin Petrochemical, and Shijiazhuang Refining & Chemical, where it is used to partially replace the gray hydrogen currently produced from natural gas. It can also supply hydrogen for transportation use to users along the hydrogen pipeline route as well as in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
Multiple hydrogen pipeline patent technologies are contributing to development. In addition, several companies have made breakthroughs in innovation related to hydrogen pipeline technology. In March 2025 alone, companies that obtained patents for hydrogen transport pipelines included China Energy Engineering Group, Gas & Power Group, Huadian Zhengzhou Mechanical Design and Research Institute, and MCC Huatian Nanjing Engineering Technology, among others. Anhui Electric Power Construction No. 2 Engineering Co., Ltd., affiliated with China Energy Engineering Group, has obtained a patent titled “A Weld Joint Alignment Tool for Large-Diameter Pipelines” ; CNOOC Gas & Power Group Co., Ltd. has applied for a patent titled “Flexible Hydrogen Transmission Pipelines and Methods for Detecting Hydrogen Leaks” ; Huadian Zhengzhou Mechanical Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd. has obtained a patent titled “A Dynamic Mixer for Natural Gas-Hydrogen Blending Pipelines” ; MCC Huatian Nanjing Engineering Technology Co., Ltd. has obtained a patent titled “A Hydrogen Storage and Mixing Transportation System”. In February, China Power Construction Group Northwest Survey and Design Institute Co., Ltd. obtained a patent titled “A test device for the hydrogen embrittlement sensitivity of hydrogen-infused natural gas pipelines”. In January, China National Petroleum and Natural Gas Group Corporation obtained a patent titled “Spiral submerged arc welded pipe for high-pressure/high-hydrogen-percentage transportation”. It is worth noting that CNPC Gem Tube Co., Ltd. has successfully developed X60M-grade high-pressure hydrogen transport pipes. This achievement surpasses the current upper limit for the highest steel grade X52M used in domestic hydrogen pipelines, reaching a level that is leading globally; it also sets a new industry record with a pipe diameter of 813 millimeters and a wall thickness of 14.3 millimeters. Last year, **Dian Tou Group Science and Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. applied for a patent titled “Adaptive Hydrogen Dosing System and Its Flow Regulation Method” ; Handan Iron and Steel Group Co., Ltd. applied for a patent for “A hydrogen transport pipeline steel L360MH and its production method” ; China University of Petroleum (Beijing) has been granted a patent for \"a joint fitting used to connect flexible hydrogen pipelines.\" These technological innovations provide more reliable assurance for the safe operation of hydrogen transport pipelines. With **continued policy support and ongoing technological innovation, hydrogen pipeline projects are encountering new opportunities for development. In the future, hydrogen transmission pipelines will play an important role in building a clean and efficient energy system, helping China achieve its goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality.
