China’s first standard for steel pipes used in hydrogen storage and transmission pipelines has been approved

On May 30, reporters learned that the **standard for steel pipes used in hydrogen storage and transmission pipelines**, developed under the leadership of the R&D institute of Bohai Equipment Company, has successfully passed the approval process by the National Steel Standardization Technical Committee. This is the first domestic **standard for steel pipes used in hydrogen storage and transmission pipelines** developed by a Chinese petroleum company.   The R&D institute of Bohai Equipment Company has conducted research on the factors that hinder the development of hydrogen pipeline construction and hydrogen energy use in China. It has carried out targeted studies on the mechanisms of damage caused by the transport of pure hydrogen/hybrid hydrogen, the development of pipelines for hydrogen transport, and the key manufacturing technologies for such pipelines, with the aim of establishing China’s first set of standards for hydrogen storage and transportation pipelines. At the same time, leveraging its strengths in the research and development of transportation equipment as well as its existing expertise in hydrogen pipeline materials, it collaborated with hydrogen energy users, steel companies, universities, research institutions, and pipeline design firms to work together on this project. The application was submitted in February 2023, and the project was approved in January 2024. The R&D Institute of Bohai Equipment Company has successively completed tasks such as standard drafting, solicitation of opinions, preliminary review, and final approval. The **standard for steel pipes used in hydrogen storage and transportation pipelines** is of great significance for accelerating the large-scale application of hydrogen energy in China and promoting the high-quality development of the hydrogen energy industry.   In recent years, Bohai Equipment has been continuously working on the development of steel pipes for hydrogen transmission pipelines. It has successfully produced various series of hydrogen transport pipes, elbows, and fittings, thereby filling gaps in China’s hydrogen transportation product portfolio. As a result, it has become the company in China that offers the largest range of steel grades, the most diverse specifications, and the most complete product line for hydrogen transport pipes.
