The construction scope of the seawater cooling project in Saudi Arabia’s Jizan Industrial City includes the offshore HDPE water intake pipes and associated facilities in the first phase, as well as onshore pump houses, drainage channels, and return GRP pipes, aimed at providing cooled seawater for supply and return to the industrial city. The total length of the HDPE pipes to be installed for this project is approximately 6,600 meters, with a pipe diameter of 3.5 meters; these are currently the largest-diameter submarine HDPE pipes installed anywhere in the world. In June 2016, the project team successfully installed 3-meter-diameter submarine HDPE pipes for the water intake and discharge project at JIGCC in Jizan, Saudi Arabia. Upon completion, the project will supply cooling water to the heavy industry complex in Jizan, Saudi Arabia, thereby supporting the development of areas such as the port zone within the Jizan Industrial City. It is reported that the project involves the shipment and installation of 16 sections of pipelines, the longest of which is 502 meters long. The S4-2 pipeline, whose installation was completed this time, is 302.9 meters long and is located in an exposed sea area with complex hydrological conditions. To ensure the smooth shipment and accurate installation of the pipes, the project team carried out thorough planning and arrangements adhering to the principle that \"every HDPE pipe is the first one.\" ； Numerical simulation analysis is carried out using the equal stiffness method to simulate the conditions during the transportation and installation of pipelines, thereby enhancing the safety and reliability of such transportation and installation processes ； Sand table simulations and actual sea-based drills are conducted for key processes such as the land transport of pipelines, sea transportation, mooring and positioning, as well as pipe end joining, to ensure thorough preparation for the pipeline transportation and to eliminate construction risks in advance.
3.5 meters in diameter – that’s really big. I have visited Baosteel’s 2-meter-diameter water intake pipeline, and it already seemed very large to me.
