Dear experts: What breakthrough developments have there been in the soda ash industry in recent years? It seems quite worrying. ——The ammonia-soda process produces soda ash of good quality; however, the problems related to waste gas, wastewater, and solid waste have never been properly resolved. With the development of green communities, no region wants to have a large dumping ground. ——Under the ammonia-soda process, the ammonium chloride market is doing poorly. It is said that one factory already has over 800,000 tons in inventory—roughly a year’s worth of production—and there’s no space left to store any more products. ——There are only limited natural soda ash resources in the whole country; they’re almost depleted. Although the quality is good, the rise in energy prices has also diminished the cost advantage. There are hardly any alkali plants that are performing well nowadays. Without any major breakthroughs, it’s difficult for the soda ash industry to survive. I’d like to ask all the experts here: is there any good solution? In recent years, what new breakthroughs have there been in processes and equipment? I heard that there have been recent developments regarding the thermally driven combined soda ash process developed recently. Does anyone know about it? Learn* it. I heard that the powder flow technology is also being used effectively. Who’s using it? Introduce yourself. I heard that the filter-equipped machine also works well. Did anyone use it? Back then, Japan’s Shin-Asahi method indeed should have had its pilot testing continued; however, Qingdao Soda Plant only carried out half of the tests and then stopped; 2. Powder flow technology is indeed being used, but its effectiveness still needs to be evaluated. Without resolving issues such as scaling and material clogging, it’s difficult to achieve wider adoption. The soda ash industry still has a market for bulky and heavy equipment; sometimes, ideals are wonderful in theory, but reality proves otherwise. 3. Belt conveyors are indeed a great asset; for newly built alkali plants, they are the top choice. For existing plants, however, it’s difficult to make modifications due to space constraints in the factory buildings. 4. Efforts to decompose ammonium chloride have been underway for several years. In 2012, the association, together with several joint alkali plants and a renowned university, embarked on technical research in this area. At the annual conference in the first half of that year, some manufacturers claimed to have succeeded; however, no publication or presentation materials related to this were seen. 5. I really have no idea about the specifics of the thermal soda ash process.
