The production process for soda ash has been in use for over 100 years. Both the ammonia-soda process and the continuous soda process rely on the alkaline carbonation of liquid ammonia to produce carbonate ions, thereby yielding soda ash. These processes are lengthy, and the use of liquid ammonia leads to a deterioration of the production environment; as a result, production costs have risen to extremely high levels, making such processes unprofitable at present. In an effort to find new technical solutions to reduce costs and improve the environmental conditions, efforts are being made in this regard.

This is a common problem for many products in China: when the market is good, there’s a rush to build new facilities or expand existing ones. After years of development in soda ash technology, there is little room left for further improvement in its underlying technologies. I used to think about the combination of processes for different products, as well as the principles of optimizing the processes in calcium carbide and acetylene plants alongside soda ash plants (producing soda ash using mirabilite as raw material).
