Recently, the 410,000-ton/year carbonate complex plant of Fujian Baihong Chemical Co., Ltd., designed by Sinopec Guangzhou Engineering Company, was successfully commissioned for the first time, producing qualified products; it is currently the largest carbonate complex plant of its kind in China. The 410,000 tons per year carbonate complex is the main core production facility of Baihong Chemical’s new materials project. It includes a 50,000 tons per year ethylene carbonate (EC) unit, a 140,000 tons per year propylene carbonate (PC) unit, a 100,000 tons per year dimethyl carbonate (DMC) unit, a 120,000 tons per year ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) and diethyl carbonate (DEC) unit, an ethanol dehydration unit, as well as various supporting auxiliary system units. The main products of this facility are high-purity lithium-ion battery electrolytes, including products such as ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate, methylethyl carbonate, and diethyl carbonate, as well as certain chemical raw materials, industrial solvents, and green chemicals. Zhuang Suqing, deputy manager of the Engineering Consulting Department at Sinopec Guangzhou Engineering Co., Ltd. and a senior engineer, said in an interview with reporters that the commissioning of the Baihong Chemical Ester Complex is of great significance to the industry. First, it has significantly enhanced the supply capacity for high-quality electrolyte solvents. The high-purity lithium-ion battery electrolyte solvents such as EC, PC, DMC, EMC, and DEC produced by this facility will increase the supply of high-quality electrolyte solvents in the domestic market, thereby alleviating the demand pressure on high-end solvents in the new energy battery industry chain. Second, it will support the rapid development of the new energy vehicle and energy storage industries. Carbonylate solvents are the key components of lithium-ion battery electrolytes, directly determining the battery’s energy density, cycle life, and safety performance. Once put into operation, this facility will be able to supply stable and high-quality solvent materials for the power batteries in new energy vehicles as well as for energy storage batteries, thereby providing a material foundation for the sustainable, healthy, and rapid development of the new energy and energy storage industries. Third, optimize the supply structure of the domestic carbonate industry. The operation of this facility will help increase industry concentration and overall energy efficiency, thereby driving the carbonate and lithium battery electrolyte industries toward higher-end and more differentiated development.
