The 1.2 million-ton ethylene glycol production and 100,000-ton electronic-grade dimethyl carbonate production project in Xuanhan, Sichuan, operated by Zhengda Kai, uses natural gas as raw material; through compression, desulfurization, and conversion, syngas is produced. The technology for ethylene glycol and dimethyl carbonate is provided by Pu Jing Chemical, while Cheng Da Engineering Company is responsible for the EPC work. Full operation is planned for 2026. The Zhengda Kai project, which involves the production of 1.2 million tons per year of MEG along with 100,000 tons per year of DMC, has a total investment of 12.2 billion yuan. It utilizes the core technology for producing dimethyl carbonate from ethylene glycol developed by Shanghai Pujing Chemical Technology Co., Ltd. (referred to as “Pujing Chemical”), with the engineering design carried out by China Chengda Engineering Co., Ltd. Sichuan Zhengda Kai New Materials Co., Ltd.’s new production project, which aims to produce 1.2 million tons of MEG per year along with 100,000 tons of electronic-grade DMC, is planned to be built in the Puguang Chemical Industrial Park within the Puguang Economic Development Zone in Sichuan Province. The main components of this project include the production of 1.2 million tons of polyester-grade ethylene glycol and 100,000 tons of electronic-grade dimethyl carbonate (DMC). The total investment for the project is 1,226,865 million yuan, of which 250,900 million yuan is allocated to environmental protection measures. The project uses natural gas from the Puguang purification plant as the feed gas; after compression and desulfurization, it is sent to a natural gas conversion unit where syngas is produced using pure oxygen conversion technology. CO2 is then removed via the MDEA method, followed by deep cooling of H2/CO and PSA pressure swing adsorption to separate H2 and CO. CO is used to synthesize DMO with purchased methanol, and H2 is then used to synthesize ethylene glycol, with by-products including ethanol, mixed monohydric alcohols, heavy dihydric alcohols, and light dihydric alcohols. Recently, upon visiting the construction site of the Zhengda Kai Advanced Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park in Xuanhan County, located in Dazhou Puguang Economic Development Zone, what came into view were tall structures and steel-frame factories. Zhang Yefei, deputy chief engineer at Sichuan Zhengda Kai New Materials Co., Ltd., said that the project is currently in the equipment installation phase, with over 3,000 construction workers working hard on the site covering more than 800 mu per day. The Sichuan Zhengda Kai new materials project has successfully completed the lifting of large-scale tower structures, laying a solid foundation for the subsequent installation of the steel structure framework, process pipelines, electrical systems, and instruments. This project is one of the key projects in Sichuan Province. Its main product, ethylene glycol, is widely used as a raw material in various industrial sectors such as polyester fiber, food-grade PET, optical films, and antifreeze. The by-product, electronic-grade DMC, is mainly used in the electrolytes for new energy batteries as well as in the synthesis of PC raw materials. Upon completion, the project will drive the coordinated development of related upstream and downstream industries in Sichuan and the central and western regions, including those in the petrochemical sector, food-grade PET, polyester-based new materials, packaging, textiles and fibers, and logistics. It will also leverage the local advantages in natural gas resources to foster the emergence of a new cluster of new material industries.
