Our country has built several strategically important gas storage facilities. Although there is no official “top 10 list,” the following storage facilities are representative in terms of scale or technology. 1. Typical gas storage facilities 1) Hutubi Gas Storage Facility: Located in Xinjiang, it is the largest natural gas storage facility in China, serving both purposes of seasonal peak shaving and emergency storage. 2) Jintan Gas Storage Facility: Located in Jiangsu, it is China’s first salt cavern gas storage facility. After expansion and renovation in 2025, its daily peak-shaving gas extraction capacity was increased to 18 million cubic meters. 3) Dazhangtuo Gas Storage Facility: Located in Tianjin, it is China’s first commercially operational underground gas storage facility. Its completion in 2000 marked a new stage in the development of underground gas storage in China. 4) Sujiao Gas Storage Complex: Located in Tianjin, with an average depth of over 4,900 meters, it is the deepest gas storage complex in the world at present. 5) Prime Minister Temple Gas Storage Facility: Located in Chongqing, it is the first underground gas storage facility in the southwest region, serving to ensure gas supply during winter in Sichuan and Chongqing as well as in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area. 6) Jianghan Salt Cavern Gas Storage: Located in Hubei, with well depths of over 2,000 meters, it is the deepest salt cavern gas storage facility in China, featuring a designed total capacity of 4.809 billion cubic meters. 2. Status of gas storage facility construction in China (1) Construction scale: Since the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the construction of gas storage facilities in China has accelerated, with the gas storage capacity rising from 23.4 billion cubic meters in 2020 to 54 billion cubic meters by the end of 2025, representing a doubling of all relevant indicators. 1) Working gas volume: Over 30 billion cubic meters, an increase of 115% compared to the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period. 2) Gas production capacity: The peak daily gas production capacity has increased from 140 million cubic meters to 350 million cubic meters. (2) Operational landscape: As of 2023, China has built 43 underground gas storage facilities, which are mainly located in the Bohai Rim region and the eastern part of the country. 1) CNPC: By the end of 2025, a total of 26 gas storage facilities (clusters) will have been built, providing a peak-shaving capacity of 26.4 billion cubic meters. 2) Sinopec and **pipeline networks: together they form a tripartite balance of power; for example, the Jianghan salt cavern gas storage facility is built and operated by Sinopec. (3) Technical breakthroughs: World-class challenges such as building reservoirs in highly water-logged oil fields and in low-permeability, widely interconnected gas fields have been overcome, and key equipment has been made domestically.
