After the introduction of electronic balances of type B, such automatic/semi-automatic mechanical balances were largely phased out; I still used them about fifteen years ago. Back then (around 1981), such scales were also rare; the master would only allow himself to weigh things, saying that if we tried to do it, we would damage the scale. Once, when the master wasn’t around, I stole and weighed it once, then carefully restored things to as they were. The next day, the master yelled at me: \"Who touched that scale? Things are already messed up now!\" Then pretend to be seriously debugging it. In fact, there’s nothing bad about it at all – I seriously suspect the instructor left some hidden clues...;P
