As the title suggests, previously, ordinary alkali (NaOH 20% + Na2CO3 7%) was used for neutralizing the process water; later, neutralizing amines were employed. After using them for about half a month, the pH value measured was between 8 and 9. What substance could this be?
Check the quality of the process water; it’s possible that a deterioration in its quality is causing an excess of hydrocarbons. Check the dilution steam generator again to see if there is any internal leakage in the quench oil heat exchanger. For the dilution steam generator, conduct various sampling analyses such as oil content in the water and TOC, to determine exactly where the problem lies

It is most likely an internal leak in the dilution steam generator, causing the quench oil to enter the process water side; therefore, the backflow valves on the process water side of each generator were opened to take samples and check the water quality. If there is a pressure gauge on the process water side, check whether the pressure is higher than usual.
