Hello everyone. During this maintenance work, the material inlet and outlet pipes of the reboiler in our isobutane removal tower have been made thicker. I’m wondering what the consequences will be – will the processing capacity increase?
The reboiler was not replaced; only the diameters of its inlet and outlet pipes were increased. This is probably intended to eliminate a bottleneck issue. Thickening the inlet pipeline of the reboiler certainly has no impact; there will be no consequences ; Thickening the outlet pipeline of the reboiler improves the gas-liquid separation effect; it has only positive effects and no negative consequences.
Agree with the view above; it’s likely that the heat exchange efficiency of the reboiler is very high, and the inlet and outlet pipelines limit the heat exchange rate, which is why it needs to be expanded
A reboiler operates on the principle of thermosiphon action; it is a special type of heat exchanger that enables heat exchange, provides vapor reflux to the tower, and also offers a space for vaporization. The liquid level of the material in the reboiler is at the same height as the liquid level in the distillation tower. The liquid phase is supplied from the bottom of the tower into the reboiler. Typically, 25-30% of the liquid phase is vaporized in the reboiler. The vaporized two-phase flow is sent back to the distillation column; the gaseous components returning to the column rise through the trays, while the liquid components fall to the bottom of the column, thereby enhancing the role of the reboiler in the separation column.
Increasing the diameter of the reboiler’s inlet and outlet pipes does not necessarily increase its capacity; the key is whether the vapor can be removed in a timely manner.
