The determination of sulfur content using a sulfur analyzer affects diesel engine after-treatment technologies. The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) DOC system is extremely sensitive to the sulfur content in diesel. The presence of sulfur can cause the NOx absorber, catalytic particulate filter, and continuously regenerating particulate filter to become poisoned and fail. At the same time, sulfur also directly affects the emissions of diesel engine particulates (PM). As the sulfur content in diesel increases, PM emissions from diesel engines also increase. Tests have shown that trucks without catalytic converters emit about twice as much PM when using diesel with a sulfur content of 400 mg/kg, compared to when using diesel with a sulfur content of 2 mg/kg. The hazards of sulfur are mainly manifested in the following aspects: (1) Severe corrosion of equipment. During the petroleum processing process, various sulfur-containing compounds decompose to produce H2S when exposed to high temperatures. When H2S is present in combination with water, it causes severe corrosion of metal equipment; for example, in atmospheric and vacuum distillation units, corrosion in areas where heavy oil is at high temperatures occurs mainly at the bottom of the atmospheric tower. If oil contains both sulfur and salts, the corrosion of metal equipment becomes even more severe. Sulfides in petroleum products can also corrode metals during use and storage ; At the same time, sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide generated by the combustion of sulfur-containing fuels react with water to form H2SO3 and H2SO4, which cause severe corrosion to machine components. Sulfur in gasoline can also affect the advanced vehicle diagnostic systems installed in vehicles, causing them to fail ; It can easily cause wear on the gasoline engine cylinders and fuel pump ; Sulfur in diesel also has an adverse effect on the service life of engines. As the sulfur content in diesel increases, the service life of the engine is reduced. (2) Affect product quality. The presence of sulfur-containing compounds severely affects the storage stability of oils, accelerates the oxidation and deterioration of refined oils, and leads to the formation of viscous precipitates ; Sulfides can also poison and deactivate the catalysts in reforming units in oil refining processes as well as in vehicle exhaust purification systems. (3) Polluting the environment. During the petroleum processing process, H2S and low-molecular-weight thioalcohols produced are toxic gases with extremely strong odors; they cause environmental pollution and are harmful to human health.
