On October 31, the Qingdao Hydrogen Energy Resource Base project, constructed by Qingdao Refining & Chemical Company, was completed. This marks another milestone in the development of Qingdao’s hydrogen energy resource base, following the completion of the company’s hydrogen pilot project on August 5 and the production of the first batch of fuel cell hydrogen in Qingdao. Next, the project will enter the production preparation phase, which includes the “three inspections and four determinations,” individual unit testing, and joint testing, with the production of hydrogen for fuel cells expected by the end of November. This project is a regional hydrogen supply center initiative spearheaded by Sinopec; it has also been listed by Shandong Province as a key demonstration project for the hydrogen industry during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. It utilizes S-PSA fuel cell hydrogen production technology owned by Sinopec, which generates hydrogen for fuel cells by recovering hydrogen-containing styrene exhaust gas used as fuel gas. The hydrogen purification capacity is 3,000 Nm3/h, equivalent to 2,250 tons per year – more than 10 times the output of previous hydrogen-related pilot projects that were put into operation. Since 2020, Qingdao Refining & Chemical Company has actively seized the opportunities presented by the development of new energy sources, overcame the impacts of the pandemic, and made efforts to accelerate the progress of project construction. Through meticulous organization and careful coordination, the shortest record ever achieved for the delivery of core equipment for similar projects up to the completion of the project was set. This project represents Qingdao Refining & Chemical Company’s effort to implement Sinopec’s new energy strategy as well as its proactive pursuit of becoming China’s leading hydrogen energy company; it is also an important step in the company’s transformation and development. Once Phase 1 of the project is put into operation, 3,200 kg/day of hydrogen for fuel cells can be produced locally, which will effectively address the issue of Qingdao’s current over-reliance on external supplies of hydrogen for fuel cells. According to the plan, the company’s hydrogen production capacity from fuel cells is set to double again in 2023, reaching 4,500 tons per year. This will meet the hydrogen demand for all the hydrogen refueling stations that are to be built during Qingdao’s 14th Five-Year Plan period, thereby providing a solid resource foundation for the high-quality and sustainable development of the hydrogen industry in Qingdao and its surrounding areas.
