Polypropylene always has a pungent odor. Where does this odor come from, and what are the measures to deal with it?
“\"Sealing and capping\" is a powerful measure taken by chemical enterprises to continuously advance the development of \"odor-free factories\". In other words, the vents, waste discharge outlets, and other open areas of the main equipment in the production area are sealed by installing blind plates to \"cover\" them or plugs to \"cap\" them, thereby eliminating trace amounts of uncontrolled emissions and preventing the generation of unpleasant odors at the source. At the same time, portable VOCs monitors, LDAR detectors, and infrared imaging equipment are used to conduct thorough inspections of all production facilities in order to trace the source of unpleasant odors; by combining monitoring data with visual assessments, the accuracy of identifying such odors is improved.

A pungent odor may be caused by leaks of propylene gas upstream or downstream; check the pressure gauges at those locations. It could also be due to an excessively high temperature of the extruder oil, or damage to the materials
This smell might be caused by propylene glycol; heating it slightly can help the propylene glycol evaporate and eliminate the odor. Are there any other methods? Please advise.

An industry challenge is that the unpleasant odor in polypropylene is generally attributed to the high porosity of polypropylene caused by catalysts, as well as residual hydrocarbon substances and volatilization. Oligomers formed during the polymerization process also carry odors, and these are currently removed primarily through post-system degassing. Vapor drying using liquid-phase loop technologies is effective in eliminating such odors. Internationally, the products of South Korea’s SK Group have the lowest odor levels, below 3.5; domestic products generally fail to reach this standard. In the past, Europe and the United States did not pay much attention to odor issues, but now it is domestic consumers who have higher requirements regarding odors (especially for automotive interiors), which has led the entire industry to pay more attention to the odor profile of polypropylene. Materials with low odor and low VOC levels are also a key area of development in the polypropylene industry. At present, this challenge has not yet been effectively overcome. I am optimistic that the use of metallocene catalysts can improve the situation, but metallocene polypropylene faces issues such as an untapped market and immature technology; few manufacturers have plans to produce entire ranges of such products, and only a few top manufacturers produce it in small quantities. However, due to its high cost, there is not much enthusiasm in the market.
