According to Sinochem New Network, Norway’s Equinor announced on February 2 that it had agreed to sell all of its assets in the Vaca Muerta shale basin in Argentina to the local company Vista Energy, with the total transaction value amounting to around $1.1 billion. This move is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to optimize its international investment portfolio strategy. Under the agreement, Equinor will sell its 30% non-operator interest in the Bandurria Sur asset, as well as its 50% non-operator interest in the Bajo del Toro asset. Both of these assets are located in Argentina’s flagship shale region, where production is growing rapidly. However, Equinor’s offshore assets in Argentina are not included in this deal. The transaction price includes a upfront cash payment of $550 million, shares of Vista Energy, as well as contingent payments tied to production levels and oil prices over the next five years. The effective date of the transaction dates back to July 1, 2025. In the third quarter of 2025, Equinor’s equity production from Bandurria Sur was approximately 24,400 barrels of oil equivalent per day, while Bajo del Toro, which is still in the early stages of development, contributed around 2,100 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The buyer, Vista Energy, is one of the leading independent producers focused on shale gas in Argentina; this acquisition will further strengthen its position in the Vaca Muerta basin.
