At 7:28 on February 12, following the successful analysis of the ethylene product and its transfer to the designated storage area, the 1.2 million tons per year ethylene production unit – the key chemical processing facility of China Petroleum Guangdong Petrochemical Integration Project (hereinafter referred to as the “Guangdong Petrochemical Project”), located in Jieyang City, Guangdong Province – completed its commissioning trial successfully on the first attempt. Thus, the Guangdong Petrochemical project has completed its entire process. Kang Zhijun, Party Secretary and Executive Director of Sinopec Guangdong Petrochemical Company, said that the Guangdong Petrochemical project is a key project in Guangdong Province, and it is also the only refining complex in China capable of processing low-quality heavy oil entirely. It is reported that the Guangdong Petrochemical Project has an annual capacity to process 20 million tons of crude oil, producing 1.2 million tons of ethylene and 2.6 million tons of aromatic compounds. Among them, the 1.2 million tons per year ethylene plant is currently the largest ethylene plant in China that utilizes domestic technology. As China Petroleum’s largest integrated refining and chemical project in terms of one-time investment, the Guangdong Petrochemical Project began construction in full scale in 2018. Bringing together top domestic and international technologies and teams, it had nearly 40,000 workers at its 920-hectare construction site at its peak. During the construction process, numerous construction records at the national, Asian, and even world levels were set. By using the world’s largest 5,000-ton gantry crane and 4,000-ton crawler crane together to lift the 4,606-ton raffinate tower, a new record for lifting the heaviest petrochemical tower in Asia was set. It is understood that once the Guangdong petrochemical project is completed and put into operation, it will be able to increase the supply of synthetic resin products by 2.5 million tons per year solely in the South China region, thereby significantly reducing the region’s reliance on imported chemical raw materials for industries such as home appliances and electronics in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
