Jilin Petrochemical’s 60,000-ton/year 1-butene plant was successfully commissioned! 2025-08-01 16:50 On July 30, the 60,000-ton/year 1-butene production unit built as part of Jilin Petrochemical’s refining and chemical transformation project successfully completed its process setup; the 1-butene product met the required standards, resulting in a successful first operation. The 1-butene plant is one of the key facilities constructed as part of the company’s transformation and upgrading project. Construction began on April 2, 2023; to date, 577 pile foundations have been installed, 4,778 cubic meters of concrete have been poured, 352 tons of steel structures have been used, and 94 various towers, tanks, and reactors have been installed. The project was completed over 19 months, and was handed over to high standards on October 30, 2024. 1-butene products are an important component of the company’s C4 chain. As key comonomers for high-density polyethylene and linear low-density polyethylene in the company, once operational, this facility will be able to supply high-quality and low-cost raw materials for these two production lines. This will help the company develop special polyolefin products with high impact resistance and high transparency, thereby enhancing its market share in emerging fields such as new energy cables and vehicle lightweighting. Major project progress: On July 30, significant progress was made again in Jilin Petrochemical’s refining and chemical transformation project, as the 600,000 tons per year styrene production facility was successfully delivered. The styrene plant is one of the key supporting facilities in Jilin Petrochemical’s project for transformation and upgrading of its refining and chemical operations; it was contracted out for construction by Huanqiu Engineering Company, which is part of CNPC Engineering, along with Jilin Chemical Construction Company. Global Jilin Company is responsible for the entire engineering design of the facility. On July 28, the 400,000-ton/year high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plant, a key facility in Jilin Petrochemical’s transformation and upgrading project that was under the general contracting of Huanqiu Jilin Company, began operations, successfully producing qualified products from the first attempt. This marks the completion of the entire process flow for this facility, representing a significant milestone in the project’s construction. On July 26, after three days of continuous efforts, the newly built 200,000 tons per year butadiene plant in the organic synthesis factory successfully completed the entire process using acetonitrile as a solvent, marking the official start of the countdown to the plant’s commissioning. At 17:55 on July 25, the process flow of the 250,000-ton/year methyl methacrate conversion unit under the company’s refining and chemical transformation project was fully established, enabling a successful first-time commissioning. Marking this moment, the commissioning of the new chemical units as part of the acrylonitrile plant’s transformation and upgrading project began. At 15:58 on July 20, the hydroprocessing unit for pyrolysis gasoline with a capacity of 1 million tons per year, part of the transformation and upgrading project, was started up using pyrolysis gasoline; feed was introduced to the first-stage hydrogenation reactor at 21:38, and to the second-stage hydrogenation reactor at 22:52. The entire process of the unit was successfully operationalized. At 8:46 on July 21, the unit produced qualified hydrogenated gasoline, achieving a successful startup on the first attempt. This is the first of the four units under the ethylene plant’s transformation and upgrading project to be put into operation. At 8:30 on July 11, after nearly 24 hours of continuous efforts, the new 40,000-ton/year EPDM production unit as part of Jilin Petrochemical’s refining and chemical transformation project successfully established the D1 production line; the first batch of qualified products of the new J-3045 grade was produced, marking a successful commissioning of the facility from the very first attempt. Marking this moment, the commissioning of new chemical plants as part of the transformation and upgrading project began. The total investment in Jilin Petrochemical’s transformation and upgrading project is 33.9 billion yuan; 21 new oil refining and chemical processing units were built, 7 units were upgraded, and 7 units including ones capable of producing 150,000 tons of ethylene were shut down. The project is divided into three areas: east, central, and west. This includes the construction of a new ethylene plant with an annual capacity of 1.2 million tons, along with downstream facilities such as a hydroprocessing plant for pyrolysis gasoline with an annual capacity of 1 million tons, a combined aromatics extraction plant with an annual capacity of 450,000 tons, a high-density polyethylene plant with an annual capacity of 400,000 tons, an ethylene oxide plant with an annual capacity of 300,000 tons, an EVA plant with an annual capacity of 400,000 tons, a phenol plant with an annual capacity of 350,000 tons, a bisphenol A plant with an annual capacity of 240,000 tons, an EPDM plant with an annual capacity of 40,000 tons, MTBE/1-butene plants with capacities of 100,000/40,000 tons respectively, a styrene plant with an annual capacity of 600,000 tons, an acrylonitrile plant with an annual capacity of 260,000 tons, an ABS plant with an annual capacity of 600,000 tons, a solvent deasphalting plant with an annual capacity of 800,000 tons, an asphalt gasification plant with an annual capacity of 160,000 tons, a butadiene rubber plant with an annual capacity of 50,000 tons, a butadiene extraction plant with an annual capacity of 200,000 tons, and an acetonitrile plant with an annual capacity of 8,000 tons.
