Sinochem New Network reports that on December 22, China’s first pilot-side-stream unit for ethylene steam cracking was successfully put into operation, marking a key breakthrough for the country in the field of green and low-carbon ethylene technology. This device was independently developed and constructed under a turnkey contract by Huanqiu Company, and it operates stably at Dushanzi Petrochemical. Compared to traditional fuel pyrolysis furnaces, electric pyrolysis furnaces eliminate smoke emissions resulting from fuel combustion at the source; with green electricity as a power source, they can achieve near-zero carbon emissions, while also enabling real-time, intelligent control of heating during the reaction process. This technical approach is highly in line with the direction of industrial upgrading characterized by advanced technologies, green energy use, and intelligent control; it is also an important practice for promoting the development of independent key core technologies in the refining industry. As one of the key projects under CNPC’s major scientific and technological initiative on \"Research and Development of Green and Low-Carbon Ethylene Technologies and Their Industrial Application,\" this project carried out cracking tests using various feedstocks such as ethylpropane, liquefied gas, and naphtha on the ethylene electrocracking furnace side-line test unit built by Huanyu Company at Dushang Petrochemical. The technical performance metrics were excellent. The project is led by Global Company, with the participation of units such as Dusheng Petrochemical and the Petroleum Chemical Research Institute to advance it together. Since the design and construction of the electric heating test platform began in 2022, the R&D team has spent 4 years working diligently on this project; it was launched successfully on its first attempt. The system enables precise and intelligent control during the heating process, and key parameters such as the pyrolysis yield have reached advanced levels in China. The project leader explained that China’s ethylene technology has gone through a development process in which \"Ethylene 1.0 technology achieved a breakthrough from nothing to something, while Ethylene 2.0 technology was upgraded to focus on diversified raw materials, larger-scale facilities, as well as energy efficiency and sustainability.\" The successful development of the electrolysis furnace test unit now marks a move forward for China’s ethylene technology in the direction of greater sustainability and lower carbon emissions, and it also opens up new pathways for making use of green electricity and establishing a new model of \"electrochemical synergy.\" Next, the team will accelerate the industrial application of this technology to provide continuous momentum for the advancement of China’s own ethylene production technologies.
