According to Sinochem New Network, recently the Oil & Gas Journal (abbreviated as OGJ) published its annual global oil and gas reserves report. Data shows that in 2025, the proven recoverable reserves of oil, natural gas, and condensate worldwide experienced substantial year-on-year growth, breaking the pattern of slight fluctuations observed over the previous three years; this provides important support for energy security during the global transition to alternative energy sources. The report shows that in 2025, global proven oil reserves increased by approximately 2.3% on a year-on-year basis, natural gas reserves rose by 3.1%, and condensate reserves increased by 2.7%. The growth rates for all three categories exceeded the industry’s previous expectations. Among them, the growth rate of natural gas reserves leads the way, reflecting the strategic emphasis on clean fossil fuels in the context of global energy transition. In terms of regional distribution, the Middle East remains the core hub for global oil and gas reserves. Traditional resource-rich countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran are boosting their oil reserves by optimizing existing oil fields and developing new exploration areas ； The Americas region has seen significant growth thanks to the continuous advancement of shale oil and gas technologies, with developments in shale oil extraction in the Permian Basin of the United States and breakthroughs in exploration of deep-sea subsea oil and gas fields in Brazil ； The Asia-Pacific region has performed well; significant progress has been made in deep onshore oil and gas exploration in China and in the development of offshore gas fields in Indonesia, which have become key drivers of growth in natural gas reserves. The report also emphasizes that the increase in reserves is not intended to encourage excessive reliance on fossil fuels, but rather to buy valuable time for the large-scale development of renewable energy and a thorough adjustment of the energy structure. In the future, the industry must continue to focus on efficient extraction of oil and gas as well as innovation in low-carbon utilization technologies, promote the coordinated development of fossil fuels and renewable energy, and help ensure a smooth transition in the global energy sector.
