On February 1, the first phase of the off-site construction project for Shanghai Petrochemical’s 30,000-ton annual production capacity of large-tow carbon fiber was mechanically completed one month ahead of schedule, entering the production preparation stage. Phase 1 includes 2 production lines with a combined capacity of 6,000 tons per year, and full operation is expected to begin in the second quarter of this year. Construction of this project will begin in full scale in July 2025. Leveraging Shanghai Petrochemical’s proprietary patent technology for large-tow carbon fiber as well as the abundant green energy resources in Inner Mongolia, it will primarily produce large-tow carbon fibers of specifications such as 48K and 60K, providing raw materials for such industries as wind power and thus contributing to the development of the new energy sector. The project is expected to be fully completed and put into operation by the end of 2027, at which time Shanghai Petrochemical’s capacity for large-tow carbon fiber will rank first in the country. This project is a key infrastructure project in Ordos City, Inner Mongolia, with the main contractor being Inner Mongolia Xinjinshan Carbon Fiber Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Shanghai Petrochemical. Building on Sinopec’s original technology for large-tow carbon fibers, this project has, through continuous research and iterative improvements, resulted in design and equipment solutions that are safer, more environmentally friendly, more mature, and more reliable, reaching international leading standards. The associated project for producing 60,000 tons per year of large-tow carbon fiber precursor fibers will be built within the existing premises of Shanghai Petrochemical, with construction set to begin in the first half of this year. Inner Mongolia Xjinjinshan Carbon Fiber Co., Ltd. is committed to establishing a leading domestic production base for large-tow carbon fiber, aiming to achieve low-cost, large-scale, and environmentally sustainable production of such carbon fiber in China.
