Recently, significant progress has been made on the new materials project at CNOOC Ningbo Daxie Petrochemical Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of CNOOC (hereinafter referred to as “Daxie Petrochemical”). According to information released by the Zhejiang Provincial Development and Reform Commission, Daxie Petrochemical’s \"40,000 tons per year ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) project\" has been officially approved. The total investment in this project amounts to 87.1461 million US dollars (approximately 630 million yuan), with production scheduled to begin in December 2028. It is reported that ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a high-performance engineering plastic with excellent properties, including high wear resistance, impact resistance, and chemical resistance. It is widely used in fields such as medical implants, lithium-ion battery separators, and high-performance fibers, and has long been one of the key new materials that China focuses on developing. The UHMWPE project that has been approved was registered in September 2025; production facilities and related infrastructure will be built using the existing resources at the Daxie Petrochemical Plant. The energy consumption per ton of product for this project is only 0.1905 tons of standard coal, which is lower than the industry average. Once operational, it is expected to generate an annual output value of over 400 million yuan, thereby helping to fill the market gap for high-quality UHMWPE products in China. As a core component of the “Phase 6 Project” framework within the overall plan for Daxie Petrochemical, this UHMWPE project works in conjunction with other initiatives to jointly develop a high-end polyolefin industry chain.
