Before manually turning the standby equipment (such as pumps or fans that are in standby mode) around, we first contact the electrical department to cut off power to the motors of those devices. Then perform manual turning of the shaft; once this is done, restore power supply to bring it back to standby mode. The purpose is to ensure the personal safety of those who perform manual turning operations. Is it necessary to follow the above practices? Would like to hear the insights of the experts here? In this regard, how do you guys do it?
A power outage is a bit exaggerated, isn’t it? The control lever can be moved to the neutral position, and communication between the shaft turning operator and the monitor should be strengthened for confirmation. The interlock should be disengaged when turning the gear.
This is the safest way to do it. But it’s a bit excessive; it’s sufficient to have a protection mechanism in place by activating the switch on-site.
It would be great if that could be done; it ensures safety and peace of mind. But in practice, it’s generally not possible to follow such strict procedures; usually, the machine is simply turned over manually~~~~

I saw a news report last year: while one worker was using pipe wrenches to turn the coupling of a water pump, another worker, unaware of what was going on, started the pump from the control room. As a result, the sudden start of the pump caused the pipe wrenches to hit the worker who was turning the coupling, leading to his death on the spot.
As long as the on-site switch is properly protected, that will suffice. What does the above text mean?
For larger devices, or those with interlocks or that can be activated remotely, special attention is needed. In the case of ordinary small devices, the coupling is located quite close to the control lever, so the situation described by the original poster should not occur. However, it is best and safest to achieve a power outage.
Your approach is commendable. Most people in the building think that simply stopping all operations will suffice, but this is a naive view; accidents never show any mercy toward anyone.
If it has an emergency stop function, use it; if not, and long-term operation is required, the power must be turned off.

Our approach is: we do not turn the shaft of pumps that start automatically, while we turn the shaft of pumps that do not start automatically. For pumps with remote start, it is best to go through the necessary procedures before performing manual rotation, otherwise problems are likely to occur.
