The bearing shells are located at the connection points between the large end of the rod and the crankshaft, as well as between the small end of the rod and the crosshead; they are mounted on the rods.
The main shaft bearing refers to the bearing at the large end of the connecting rod, that is, the bearing connected to the compressor crankshaft. The small-end bearing refers to the bearing where the connecting rod is connected to the crosshead pin; it is usually in the form of a copper sleeve, and is often referred to as a small-end copper sleeve
The main bearing shells provide radial support for the crankshaft. The bearing shells between the crank pins and the connecting rods are known as the big-end bearings, and these are usually lined with beryllium copper. The small-end bearings, on the other hand, consist of copper sleeves
