The feed pump on the molecular distillation system, a Mahr gear pump, would not rotate; upon disassembly for inspection, it was found that the coupling at the pump end had worn out. The small components involved are easy to disassemble, and they exhibit extremely high precision in manufacturing; there are no sealing gaskets between the three layers of the gear pump casing; I don’t know how it achieves sealing; is there anyone among you who knows and can explain it to us? ! It’s the flatness of the two mating surfaces that is used to achieve sealing~~~ The manufacturing process involves precision grinding~~~ The issue is that, under the designed conditions, the forging does not experience any stress or deformation due to thermal or pressure effects; this level of control technology is truly something worth showing off~~~ It’s possible to achieve a mirror-like finish in China as well, but it’s very difficult to achieve controlled, batch-level minimal deformation~~~~
All the metering pumps from Mag we use are like this: if not repaired properly, they start leaking. The gap between the gears and the chamber is less than 0.01 mm, yet they can still rotate – that’s really amazing
With sealing relying solely on planar processing in this way, liquids should work fine, but gases are likely to present difficulties, especially at high pressures.
We use this type of pump every day; I have tested its pressure once, and it maintains a seal through a flat surface, with no leakage at 5 bar
