One of our factory’s reciprocating compressors has an electrical issue indicating that the motor is experiencing overcurrent. We were asked to check the main unit; I went to the control room and checked the flow rate, temperature, and pressure – all of which were normal with no abnormalities. Could someone please help analyze whether the problem lies with the motor or the main unit?

A detailed inspection of the operating conditions and performance of the reciprocating compressor is necessary. Overcurrent is usually least likely to be caused by a problem with the motor, while process-related factors are more likely to be the cause
If the friction is high, it is also possible for the current to exceed the limit.
Piston machines are used very rarely, unless for high pressures; excessive current in screw machines is quite normal
Reduce the compressor load to verify whether the current decreases. . . Now I know whose fault it is
There are many process-related issues; if pressure, temperature, and flow rate remain unchanged, then check whether the molecular weights of the other substances have increased
Has the process medium changed? Is the coupling faulty? Are the compressor and motor bearings in good condition?
