In the production process, process accident issues generally depend on the rationality of the process design and the sense of responsibility shown by the operators. In normal production, there are no relevant statistical data available on the factors that affect production; equipment failures are undoubtedly the primary cause of disruptions in normal production. The causes of equipment failures are complex, influenced by various factors such as equipment selection, installation and commissioning, equipment maintenance, the level of technical skills in inspection and repair, the precision and quality of wear-prone parts, the operating environment, and the skill level of the personnel. What are your experiences regarding the challenges faced by equipment managers in companies?
Managing equipment is not easy; no matter what causes disruptions in production, the first thing to check is the equipment. Explaining things doesn’t help – one has to disassemble and reassemble the equipment. In the end, it’s often the process itself that’s the issue. Moreover, the proper functioning of equipment depends not only on adequate maintenance but also on how it is used. Incorrect usage can significantly affect the equipment’s lifespan. As for issues related to the manufacturing process, there’s little that equipment management can do about them – it can be quite frustrating at times. For mechanical equipment, it is necessary for maintenance personnel, inspectors, and users to all fulfill their duties responsibly; failure to do so can have significant consequences. As equipment managers, it is impossible to expect everyone to meet these standards 100% of the time, so some failures are inevitable. Although the spirit of craftsmanship is often emphasized, few people manage to embody it in practice. Of course, this is not due to individual workers alone – the existing conditions do not allow for it: low wages for front-line workers, pressure to speed up maintenance work, staffing shortages, and high production demands. Under such circumstances, even the best equipment cannot withstand the strain, and the spirit of craftsmanship cannot be brought into play; one can only do their best and live with a clear conscience.
The management system needs to be sound; the maintenance team members should communicate regularly with engineers to improve the equipment and reduce its failure rate!
Equipment systems are very important at corporate locations, but equipment managers find themselves in a tricky position within refineries.
