Increasing the clearance space in the rt cylinder can reduce the compressor’s discharge volume. What is the principle behind this, and why does it lead to a reduction?
Increasing the clearance reduces the amount of air drawn in per inhalation, thereby decreasing the exhaust volume.

When the clearance volume increases, each time inhalation begins, the remaining gas (the gas that remains in the clearance space under exhaust pressure) starts to expand. When the pressure drops to a level slightly lower than the intake pressure, the intake valve opens and inhalation begins. At this point, there is already some gas inside the compressor cylinder; the greater the amount of such gas, the less air will be drawn in. . . .

The principle of adjusting the air volume with a reciprocating compressor’s clearance: First, the power diagram is shown; based on this diagram, an additional clearance amount is added. 2. The area enclosed by the vertical axis and line AB represents the fixed clearance. The expansion line caused by the high-pressure gas within this fixed clearance is the slanted line on the left side of the power diagram, and the white area to the left of this line constitutes the region of ineffective work. 3. When an additional clearance amount is added, the expansion resulting from the high-pressure gas in the combined total of both clearances creates another triangular area on the power diagram (the colored triangular area indicating the increase in expansion), thereby reducing the effective working area to “Working Area B”. 4. By changing the clearance, it is possible to achieve stepless adjustment of the exhaust volume
