One of our plants’ two-stage piston compressors stopped operating on February 19th. The data available on the related DCS at the time of the shutdown was as follows: An inspection of the compressor’s crank mechanism revealed no issues. The fault type is current overload; the trip current is 276A, and the rated current is 124A. I would like to ask the experts what causes this situation?
Is there a trend in the motor’s ammeter reading? What is the operating current under normal conditions? Does the current fluctuate first or increase suddenly? Are there any fluctuations in the flow rate of the process gas for the compressor? Personally, I think it’s necessary to analyze things from multiple perspectives.
Check the cumulative operating time of the compressor; once it reaches 2,000 hours at the beginning of operation, it is necessary to inspect the wear condition of the piston rings and support rings. Considering various aspects, it is possible to first disconnect the crankshaft pulley and coupling in order to check the operation of the motor.
1. Check the comparison between flow rate and current to see the current fluctuations during normal operation. We have had that too
Before the sudden stop, the current trend was relatively stable, and the current value was not high. I was wondering if you finally found out what the cause was?
1. If it stops operating right after being turned on, consider a mechanical fault in the compressor; this can be diagnosed by manually rotating the compressor shaft; 2. If a shutdown occurs during operation, check for faults on the frequency converter side
