Recently, China’s first medium-speed, high-power 12V240H-DFA ammonia-fueled engine, independently developed by CRRC Dalian Company, was successfully ignited. This achievement marks China’s breakthrough in and mastery of the key technologies related to ammonia-fueled engines, as well as the establishment of a complete industrial chain covering engine components, complete engines, and application scenarios. By driving innovation in zero-carbon engine technology, it also contributes to the upgrading of the traditional engine industry and accelerates the transition toward carbon-free engines in China. The 12V240H-DFA ammonia-fueled engine can achieve a single-cylinder power of 208 kilowatts; ammonia accounts for 85% of the fuel used, which reduces carbon emissions by 80%, and its emissions meet the standards of Phase II of national regulations. The engine utilizes low-pressure electronically controlled multi-point injection of ammonia along with high-pressure electronic injection for diesel, allowing for precise control of fuel supply. It is at the international advanced level and the leading level in China in terms of power output, efficiency, emissions, technology, and reliability. This engine features high safety, enabling independent control of diesel injection, ammonia injection, and security functions. By optimizing the diesel and ammonia injection systems, it maximizes combustion efficiency in the dual-fuel diesel-ammonia mode. In terms of engine safety protection, after a thorough assessment of the safety implications of using ammonia as fuel on engine operation, use, and maintenance, a comprehensive safety protection system was developed. At the same time, research was carried out on the main risks associated with ammonia-fueled engines sowie on methods for addressing and verifying these risks, ensuring that the entire engine complies with relevant safety regulations. Going forward, the 12V240H-DFA ammonia-fueled engine will be installed on China’s first ammonia-fueled tugboat, enabling a demonstration application of such engines.
