The standard materials for steel plates used in pressure vessels are Q235R and Q345R. The length of these plates is usually fixed at 6, 8, 10, or 12 meters; 12 meters is considered quite long. The widths available are 1.8 meters, 2.0 meters, 2.2 meters, 2.4 meters, and 2.5 meters, with 2.5 meters being the maximum width. In terms of thickness, the options include 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 25, 28, 30, 35, and 40 millimeters. Generally, it becomes difficult to transport plates that are longer than 12 meters or wider than 2.5 meters, and this will increase the ordering cost. For plates of custom lengths, the manufacturer will cut them to the desired length, but this will take longer, usually between half a month to one month, depending on the delivery time. There is also a charge for custom lengths. Typically, container plates undergo four cuts during inspection; some smaller manufacturers may charge an additional fee for cutting edges that are not smooth enough and need to be cut off as waste. Fortunately, such plates are cheaper. When purchasing, one can calculate the required dimensions in advance to determine the most suitable option. In the North China and South China markets, Ansteel, Yuanbaoshan, Wenfeng, and Tangsteel are well-regarded for their container plate quality. For export-oriented applications that require high-strength, heat-resistant materials or special types of plates, Wuyang is a good choice; they also produce tank and armor plates. There are many suppliers near Shanghai, such as Jigang, Nanjing Iron and Steel, and Xingcheng. For orders of less than 100 tons per specification, it’s better to use traders. The same applies to mixed-order situations; for large quantities, it’s better to order directly from steel mills. Don’t worry, they are just as eager to complete orders as you are, especially when their profits are low. In cases where the order quantity is extremely small, for example, if your manager is as demanding as mine and refuses any excess material or inventory buildup, then it’s better to find a trader who can cut the material to your specified dimensions. Of course, this will result in a higher price, but there will be no inventory involved, and it won’t tie up capital. The sales figures will also look better

Guidelines for Purchasing Stainless Steel Plates: There are no specialized container plates for stainless steel; the selection must be based on the plans provided by technical experts, taking into account factors such as corrosion resistance, temperature conditions, and pressure levels. For ordinary stainless steel, plates with a thickness of less than 6 mm (including 6 mm) are flat sheets, with widths typically ranging from 1220, 1215, 1400, to 1500 mm – these are sheets that are cut from full rolls. Plates with a thickness of 8 mm or more are considered medium-thickness plates, with sizes including 1500, 1600, 1800, and 2000 mm. In very rare cases (e.g., from Baosteel), plates with widths over 2 meters may be available. The standard lengths are 6, 8, 10, and 12 meters; some longer lengths are also available. Medium-thickness plates can also have burrs on their edges. As a reference, the same inspection and weighing procedures apply as for ordinary carbon steel plates. It’s important to note the issue of variations in thickness: since stainless steel is expensive and sold by weight, even slight variations can result in significant price differences. This is also an opportunity for unscrupulous sellers to make profits. Manufacturers of medium-thickness stainless steel plates include Taiyuan Iron and Steel in Shanxi, Taishan in Shandong, Baosteel, Dingxin in Fujian, Jiuquan Iron and Steel, Northeast Special Steel in Dalian, Pohang, Zhangjiagang, and Qingdao. If performance requirements aren’t very high, products from Taishan, Dingxin, and Jiuquan Iron and Steel can be chosen; these are the most commonly available options in the market. For applications requiring extremely high standards, only Taiyuan Iron and Steel and Baosteel should be considered. Stainless steel grades can be classified by their properties: there’s the 201 series (7000–8000), 304 (12500–12800), and 400 series (8000–9000). The approximate price ranges are as follows. The symbols J and L added after the grade indicate enhanced versions; more detailed information can be found in manuals. Such enhanced versions command a significantly higher price. It’s recommended to order directly from manufacturers; orders of around ten tons are usually sufficient for production. Be cautious of the following: 1) Recycled materials from Jiangsu’s Dainan area – be sure to thoroughly verify suppliers and sources in this region. 2) Processed stainless steel, stair handrails, anti-corrosion flooring, and decorative stainless steel are generally made by coating iron with stainless steel, resulting in prices that are about half as low. In short, the market for stainless steel is complex, with limited supply, so careful consideration is needed
