The company has a 20-cubic-meter PP storage tank (with an inclined bottom and a slope of 3%) used to store materials containing approximately 5% hydrochloric acid; Currently, cracks have appeared at the bottom of the tank, causing leaks. The conventional repair method involves using PP welding rods for patching, but due to factors such as welding techniques and material aging, the effectiveness of this approach does not last long ; To reduce costs, and since the management does not want to replace the storage tanks (new fiberglass storage tanks of 20 cubic meters cost around 30,000 per unit), a repair solution was proposed: using fiberglass material for lining, with a thickness of 1–2 mm, and the lining to be installed on-site ; Lining location: back cover and 1m above the back cover. So questions arise: 1. Can fiberglass be bonded tightly to PP? 2. The shrinkage rates of the two materials are definitely different; will this ultimately lead to material delamination? Is the crack at the bottom of the tank in the PP plate itself or at the joint? In any case, it is certainly not caused by corrosion, but rather by cracking due to material aging or insufficient structural strength. Therefore, the focus for solving the problem is not corrosion prevention, but rather the structural strength/stiffness of the tank. Then your plan is futile. You should have used carbon steel + PP (lining) or tanks with fiberglass lining from the start.
For storage tanks made of pure PP, there are models with capacities of not only 20 cubic meters, but also 50 cubic meters and even 100 cubic meters; the strength of the material is no issue
The fiberglass lining is fine and can be used
Can’t even afford to buy a 3W tank? To resolve the issue completely, change the tank; those with a steel lining and PE coating can last for many years
It should be possible; we’ve used PP lining with fiberglass in the past to increase strength, which is the opposite of what you’re using here
